Abstract

School culture-based Character Education Strengthening emphasizes the development of a school environment that internalizes character values through activities adapted to the needs and characteristics of each educational institution. One of the long-established practices implemented in several public primary schools in Lengayang District, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, is muhadharah. This study aims to analyze the implementation of muhadharah as part of school culture and to identify the character values fostered through this activity. The study employed a qualitative case study design. The participants consisted of Islamic Religious Education teachers who were members of the Islamic Religious Education Teachers' Working Group (Kelompok Kerja Guru Pendidikan Agama Islam) and primary school students selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that muhadharah is implemented through three patterns: student performances, student performances reinforced by instructional guidance from Islamic Religious Education teachers, and student performances complemented by invited religious scholars during specific religious events. These activities foster religious, creative, hardworking, independent, cooperative, courageous, disciplined, and reading-oriented character values among students. The study concludes that muhadharah represents an effective form of school culture-based character education that contributes to character development in primary schools.
